Pearl Jewelry: How to Care for Your Pearls

Pearl jewelry is a timeless addition to every woman’s jewelry collection. They fit all occasions and are worn more than any other jewelry style. Like anything of value, pearls require specific attention and care in order to maintain the luster and shine of the Pearl jewelry.

One needs to follow some basic steps while handling the pearl jewelry. This increases its life and gives keeps it looking new. These simple steps are as follows:
  • Wear the pearl necklace as a “final touch” to your outfit. This prevents them from coming in contact with your cosmetics and perfumes that contain chemicals which can damage the surface of your pearls.
  • One should wipe the pearl jewelry using a soft cloth or cotton swab to remove perspiration or cosmetics from its surface. This helps in maintaining the surface luster of the pears.
  • Avoid wearing pearl rings and bracelets regularly. These styles are more subjected to scratching and surface rubbing as you tend to work with your hands.
  • Prevent stretching of the strands of pearls in a necklace or bracelet by handling them delicately.  If the strands are stretched, it gives a shabby and old look to your jewelry.
  • Avoid use of harmful chemicals and detergents to clean your pearl jewelry. Use only mild soap, mineral water and soft cloth or cotton to clean the surface of your pearls.
  • The surface of pearls is prone to scratches when kept in boxes. They should be kept separately in soft pouches made of silk or cotton.
